Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Lights

solar_garden_lightsFew topics receive as much attention in the world of garden lighting as how to use solar garden lights, and for good reason.  There are a multitude of advantages to using solar lights for your outdoor garden lighting.  However, lost in much of the hype is the fact that there are also several downsides to solar lights.  Fortunately, most of these downsides apply to the lower end models and as long as you stay away from these, you experiences with solar lighting should be an incredible one.

One of the biggest advantages to solar garden lighting is the fact that there is absolutely no hassle with it when it comes to installation.  All the is required of you is that you find a spot in your yard the gets direct sunlight, stick the light in the ground, and point it in the direction you want the light to shine.  The lights will charge themselves using sunlight automatically and will turn on when the sun goes down and off when the sun comes up automatically.  Not only are they easy to install, they’re environmentally friendly and nearly maintenance free as well.  Some people may go as long as six or seven years without having to change the batteries on their lights.

However, there are also significant downsides to using garden lights powered by the sun.  The biggest downside is that these lights aren’t as bright or as reliable as lights that are plugged into the electrical grid.  A few cloudy days in a row could leave you with very dim lights or lights that only last a small portion of the night.  To avoid this, you should always try to buy higher quality lights.  Higher quality lights will have the most advanced solar panels on them, so they will turn a higher portion of the sun’s rays into electricity for the light.  They will also generally have brighter and better LEDs and better batteries, giving the bulb more power for longer.
