When it comes to useful items that are also decorative, the wood tray should be near the top of the list. They can be used for serving, for storing items such as napkins and silverware or for organizing the mail. Let’s take a look at some of the ways a wood tray can be utilized in your home.

Wood trays can be very practical for serving food and drinks since they are sturdy and typically have handles and a rim to keep items from falling off. Many wood serving trays have a lacquer finish to make wiping up spills easy. If you have a large ottoman, a wood tray will provide a place for family or guests to put down a glass. Serving trays are great for kid’s snacks as well as cocktails and appetizers for a party.

Anytime you need to move food, drinks or other items from kitchen to dining room or even to a deck or patio, transport them in style on a beautiful wood tray. Both serving and clean-up will be much easier if you don’t have to make as many trips back and forth.

There are many other ways to put your wood tray to work when it is not being used as a serving tray. Keep it on the coffee table to hold your remote controls and TV guides. Or put a small wood try in an entry way to hold keys, cell phones and loose change. A wood letter tray could also keep the day’s mail in one place so everyone could see it as they come in the house.

Look for wood trays in all different sizes and finishes in home décor stores and at online retailers. You should be able to find trays to match any type of decorating style. If you have an attractive wood tray that you really like, you could also stand it up on a bookcase or hang in on the wall when it is not in use. Now that we have come up with all of these great ways to use a wood tray, we will probably have to get more than one!

The kitchen window is probably the most used window in any house. Opened to add fresh air during cooking and often a focal point of the dining area regardless of whether the kitchen is being used, this window is a visual center piece of many a home. The quickest, least expensive and most impressive way to add a new look to your kitchen is to change or add some curtains.

Types

The most common types of kitchen curtain are the voile curtains, roman blinds or café style curtains. Kitchen windows may be smaller than other windows and are usually around a work area that can get messy and cluttered. Thus longer curtains that would have to be constantly tied back are not practical.

Café Curtain

A café curtain is hung over the bottom half of the window with a bar giving privacy while allowing light to shine through the uncovered top half of the window. A top valance is often included but does not normally hang over the top part of the window. The valance can be adjusted though to cover the window completely.

Roman Blinds

The roman blind is a popular style in curtains and is a favorite of decorators. While suitable in any room it is often used in the kitchen because of how easy it is to raise and lower the shade while still allowing it to retain its elegant style. Designed in a style that allows you to raise the shade from the bottom (like other shades) or from the top. Lowering the shade from the top gives one the ability to let light in without having glare detract from the room.

The Voile curtain

The voile curtain is identified by its very sheer material. It is very light and easily moved, though strong enough that it can be embroidered. This type of kitchen curtain gives the room a very elegant feel and is perfect for many of the more expensive kitchen designs in homes today. Like the roman blind this type of curtain can be found in any room of the house but should be hung specially so to fit the kitchen window properly.

Rods

Just as important as the curtain itself is the rod that will hold it in place. For instance, the café style kitchen curtain is going to require a spring bar as it sets half way up the window. Make sure the rod fits with the kitchen style as it too will be a focal point. A wrought iron rod may look out of place in a modern kitchen, while an old cane cut down to size may look great in a country kitchen.

Valance

The decorative top of the curtain is called the valance. Standard valances are available but many people go to craft stores and get ideas of how to design their own. This is where you can be very creative and put a unique touch on your kitchen curtain. For instance, dish towels sewn together can make a nice valance. For a more elegant feel a board mounted valance with velvet pleats may fit perfectly.

When decorating your kitchen and setting it up the way you want, so often it seems we never have room for everything we need in our kitchens, let alone everything that we want in the them. While there are definitely some ways to save space, and some things that can be cut out, you should definitely make sure that you have a great place to be able to store your spices. A spice rack is a great way to be able to keep your spices organized and contained in a smaller area. There are a few different types of spice racks that you can get, depending on where you have space to put there. Here are a few of the different kinds:

Carousel Spice Rack – If you have a little bit of space on your counters but not your cabinets, then a carousel spice rack is perfect for you. Because they use vertical space to store the spice containers, you’re able to fit a lot more in a small amount of space. And with the carousel type action, you’re able to rotate it around to find just the spice that you need, and allowing you to store even more.

Wall Spice Rack - If your counters and cupboards are full, then you can get a spice rack that will hang up on your wall, allowing you to store some spices there. This will still allow them to be easily accessible for cooking, but keeping them out of the spces where you have very little room. The downside of wall spice racks is that they cannot hold as many spices as other types can.

Cupboard Spice Rack – Lastly, you’ll be able to use some cupboard space if you have it to store your spices in a cupboard spice rack. While you can just stack the spices in the cupboard, that doesn’t utilize all of the space that you have in the cupboard, and so using a specially design spice rack for the cupboard will allow you to be able to maximize the space and get as many different spices in there as you can.

Of course, you will use your breakfast nook for eating meals. In fact, you will probably eat most of your meals there because the modern family does not sit down in the formal dining room very often. That room is usually reserved for special occasions or when you have guests. However, you will probably use that room for much more than eating meals.

The kitchen is the hub of most homes. People gather there after their days to discuss what happened as meals are prepared. When guests come, you often gather in the kitchen to talk and catch up. Perhaps it is the proximity to food that makes this room so popular, but I think it also has to do with the comfort level as well. Kitchens are well lived in and comfortable, especially if you have a nice breakfast nook. The breakfast nook can help to make people more comfortable and therefore it becomes a location for much more than eating.

The breakfast nook set will be the setting for family meetings and social gatherings. That is why you want to make sure that you can accommodate as many people as possible in the space provided. Another popular use of the breakfast nook is as a work surface for your kids while they do homework or work on art projects, or for you to do bills and family budgeting. The reason this is a good location is that you can be close by to help your kids with their homework if they need it while you prepare dinner each night. You can also keep an eye on them to make sure they are doing their homework. While your spouse does the dishes after a meal, you can sit at the breakfast table to pay bills or do other household work so that you are close to each other when items need to be discussed.

Many corner breakfast nook sets come equipped with under the seat bench storage so supplies for the above mentioned activities can be close at hand. Alternatively, you can store board games and cards in the breakfast nook with storage so that a family night is easy to organize before everybody rushes away from the dinner table.

The kitchen cooking area focuses on the ability there to wash, prep, and cook food. Without running water it would be difficult to function.

Kitchen faucet is one of the focal elements and most frequently used fixtures in the kitchen. There are different designs, sizes, finishes, and shapes available in the market and they also offer ornamental value for any type of kitchens. Here is a simple buying guide for selecting a new kitchen faucet that perfectly fits the kitchen.

The factors that should be considered while installing a new one are mounting options, features, functions, and finish. The faucets are mounted normally in three ways: deck plate, non-deck plate, and wall-mount. In deck plate, all fixtures are attached into a single unit by combining them on a mounting late. In non-deck plate, faucet is mounted individually on the countertop.

The major fixtures are handles, sprayers, and spouts. The handles come in three varieties: single-handle, double-handle, and widespread handle. The sprayers are of three types: pull-out, pull-down, and side sprayers. Spouts come in different heights and styles and an ideal spout should reach the midpoint of the sink as much as possible.

The larger sinks require 12” – 14” spout and an average sink requires 8” – 10” spout. Most people prefer gooseneck or high-arc spout because of its elegant style and features. The finish refers to the body coating done on the handles and spouts. It is always better to choose the finish that suits kitchen décor, theme, appliances, lighting, and which coordinates with your other home accessories.

Today, there are many types of finishes that offer high durability and resistive to discoloration or abrasion. The main aspects that come while choosing a faucet are the budget and preference. The faucets are available in different types of materials: chrome, brass, stainless steel, nickel, and copper. Some faucets come with additional features such as pot-filler, filtration, scraper, hands-free function, and flow-rate restrictor.

Adding the new faucet will surely be a nice accent touch for making a really beautiful home.

So, you’ve decided to take your tiny, nearly unusable kitchen and remodel it to better suit your needs. That’s wonderful, but you need to take a moment and consider the one major disadvantage that all small kitchens possess – they’re small. It is hard to store a dozen appliances, every countertop device you can imagine, and enough counter space to actually work into a space where you can barely turn around. That is why you need to keep the efficient use of kitchen space in mind at every step of the design and remodeling process.

There are quite a few ways of doing this that you can make use of when designing your perfect small kitchen. Since you are taking the time and putting forth the financing to actually remodel your kitchen, why not also take the opportunity to make it work as efficiently for you as possible. Instead of having just a counter pressed up against the wall, you can install a dishwasher beneath the counter to not only make your life a little more convenient, but also provide greater functionality to the same amount of space. And why stop there? Above the counter, you can even place a cabinet to act as potential storage space.

Storage space is very important in the kitchen. Not only do you need enough space to hold all of your ingredients, but you also need space to hold your silverware, plates, pots and pans, and any small appliances that you are not going to be using all the time. If you don’t have room to put them away when you are not using them, small appliances do little more than clutter up the counters and reduce your potential work area.

When you are remodeling your kitchen, it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of choosing tiles, patterns, and appliances. The danger comes when you get so caught up in other things that you forget that you are working in a very limited space. In addition to working space, your kitchen needs to have ample storage space for it to be not only a beautiful addition to your home, but a functional one.

It’s pretty common these days find an island (i.e. a discrete work space separate to the wall units) set in the middle of the kitchen. And that’s quite probably because there are many benefits associated with having an island, but it’s not all one-way traffic on that score.

A really big advantage that any kitchen island offers is that it brings more storage and working space. Kitchen units are typically fitted against the surrounding walls in a kitchen, but after negotiating around doors and windows the amount of usable space left can be surprisingly limited.

Increasing visual appeal is another good reason, because an island helps the kitchen seem more interesting as well as helping to “connect” potentially isolated zones. When counters and cupboards are laid out around the periphery, you must keep traveling across a (somewhat dull) central void.

So what are your options with a kitchen island? The answer is many and varied and including but not restricted to: formal and informal dining; social gatherings; auxiliary working zone with or without hobs, sinks or ovens installed. But whatever your preference, be sure to exploit the chance to also install some contemporary kitchen lighting ideas.

A very popular yet nonetheless very effective lighting technique is simply to suspend kitchen pendant lights. These typically act as eye-catching features by themselves but also serve a more utilitarian purpose – task lighting when actually using the island.

However a kitchen island is not always a suitable design solution. While there are indeed few better ways to improve both the functionality and visual appeal of a large kitchen, where the smaller kitchen is concerned you should think carefully before opting for an island as a default decision.

Smaller kitchens can sometimes benefit from the introduction of an island, but you must ensure that you’re not sacrificing space you can ill afford to lose and creating a tight and uncomfortable space, or at the end of the day just incorporating something that really doesn’t belong. An island should always harmonize with its kitchen and never dominate it.

If your in the process of planning a new kitchen for your home, you may want to keep the color green in mind. And, no I don’t mean for painting. What I was thinking about was coming up with a new kitchen that is a little nicer to the planet. If your thinking of having your kitchen redone, then it’s probably more than a couple of years old. In which case, there is probably lots of room for improvement with it comes to reducing the carbon footprint of your kitchen.

So, lets start at the beginning. If your doing a major renovation, that likely means your replacing a lot of stuff. That can include fridges, stoves, dishwashers, microwaves, tables, chairs, cupboards and flooring. That’s a lot of waste to throw in the dumpster, and I’m sure your already thinking you can do better with it. First of all, you should try to either reuse some of this stuff your self if you can. Cottages, and other rooms in your house are a good place to start. If you don’t have a need for it, then try and give it away to friends, family, second hand stores, or places like Habitat For Humanity. They’ll all make good use of it, or find someone who can. If none of these places want your old stuff, then check if your city or town has a recycling center. That way, at least it can get made into other useful stuff.

Now, as you move in to the actual redecorating, give some thought to your new construction materials. Try to choose paint, drywall and flooring that’s friendly to the environment. Both from a sustainability standpoint, and a non-toxic standpoint. Low VOC or Volatile Organic Compound paint is a good place to start. It’s not only nicer to the environment but to the people living in your home as well.

Sustainability is the key word when picking out any wood based products for your new kitchen. That includes cupboards, flooring, trim, chairs, tables and kitchen islands. Bamboo is becoming increasingly popular in today’s new renovations projects largely because it grows so quickly and replenishes itself much faster than traditional wood tree forests. It also has the added benefit of looking great as well.

Use natural energy as much as possible when redesigning your kitchen. Natural sunlight is really the best light around, and if you can position your windows to collect the most real sun you can, you’ll benefit in a number of ways. You’ll save on both heating, cooling and hydro. Just make sure the windows you choose are energy efficient. Older kitchens were lucky enough to incorporate a place for the garbage can, let alone the multiple recycling containers we see everywhere now. If you can include some good recycling bins in your kitchen, you’ll be more likely to use them and make your life a little easier.
